Acting Tips

Who of us hasn’t dreamed of becoming an actor/actress in our childhood? I certainly did; although I’m more of a writer now, I still remember the drama class and the things that it taught me in fourth grade. The best thing the drama class taught me is how to be confident in front of an audience, but there are much more things that you should keep in mind to become a great actor. In this article, we’ll discuss the things that an actor should keep in mind at all times – simple acting tips. Whether you want to prepare yourself for a play at school or you want to become a Hollywood class actor, you will have to do a lot of things and throw in a lot of practice to make your acting stand out.

Start with your voice.
It’s your voice that counts the most when you act, nothing else. Sing, yell, put noise blockers in your ears, do everything you can to make your voice sound outstanding. Don’t use a monotone voice – make each sentence stand out in an interesting way. See Marlon Brando in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGosYIlXdmU, he really does the trick with his voice. Although there are parts in which you can’t hear his voice, it’s clear that his voice isn’t coming from the ‘actor’ Marlon Brando, it sounds just like it is coming from Colonel Kurtz, an officer gone postal.

Act in your everyday life.
It’ll surely make you a better actor, because you need to act quite good for people to believe you when you act. Simple situations at home, like the ‘one of my socks is missing a pair’ can become fun through acting. “There must be some reasonable explanation for this; therefore, I will find the missing sock, be it over my dead body!” Just avoid overdoing it; you shouldn’t act when your partners want to break up with you.

Focus on the role; don’t focus on unneeded things like small mistakes.
See Heath Ledger in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8PxG5zvgOM – probably the best acting of year 2008. Although Heath’s a goner now, he surely lived the role of Joker in the Dark Knight, and you too must live your role like you really mean it. Be it Romeo or just a servant which has two lines in the play, you must live your assigned role to the fullest and you must be brave enough to do so.

Acting is one of the most interesting professions that the world has to offer for a human being, because you can not only get filthy rich and famous (if you’re successful, that is, most of the actors from where I live have trouble feeding themselves), but also live out a variety of personas each day, meet a lot of new people and are generally more successful than the vast majority of people even if they leave acting behind. These were the acting tips that were on my mind; tell me, what’s your acting experience? Maybe you have tips that are waiting to see the daylight? Share them with us.

Casting Calls

If you're wondering how to become an actress, one of the first things you'll need to aside from attending an acting school for training is to get used to the fact that you will have to attend a lot of auditions.

Hundreds if not thousands of them. There are a number of types of auditions you may be going to, so it's best to get the jargon down right off the bat. Casting Call: This is usually an open-ended audition for which you may or may not need to have an agent book you. In general, casting calls can go on all day and you may have a window of time during which you are called in to audition.

Cattle Call/Open Call: This is similar to a casting call, but is much looser in terms of how it's organized. You often do not need an agent to book you a slot. In fact, often there is no time slot for anyone; it's first come, first auditioned. Casting Director Audition: This is generally a specific appointment set up by your agent, during which you will read for a specific director. Callback: Once you've passed the first round of auditions, you may be called back to read again. Often, these auditions will involve you reading sides from the play or film rather than having you perform prepared material.
